FAQs – 5. How do I acquire the rights to put on a REPO! stage play?
Posted by terrance
I’m thrilled to say that this is one of my most frequently asked questions. It’s thrilling because I can’t think of anything more validating as an artist than receiving letters from people all over the globe interested in staging interpretations of my art. I suppose the only thing better will be showing up in a theatre one day, sitting back, & witnessing the fruits of these requests made reality.
But here’s the thing: I no longer own REPO! Darren Smith no longer owns REPO! The property belongs to the producers of REPO! The Movie. So, while I’d love to tell each and every one of you, “go forth and produce staged versions of your favorite organ-repossessing Goth opera wherever you can find 4 walls, a flashlight, & a microphone”, this decision isn’t up to me.
That said, REPO!’s creative team and I have discussed ideas on how—in our perfect worlds—we’d like to see REPO! brought back to the stage: premiered in a major way on a stage in New York, Las Vegas, London, or the like. Following this, REPO! The Stage Play would work its way into smaller venues until eventually being performed on stages all across the planet. And in perpetuity. TESTIFY!
So, if you’re the producer of major staged works for Broadway-level venues, reach out to Twisted Pictures or Lions Gate Entertainment. Tell them you want to turn one of their catalog films into a theatrical wonder. Everyone else, you may need to wait until after REPO!’s made a significant world debut on a major stage.

That really put a damper on my year, Terrance.
I wanted to perform some scenes/songs from REPO! at ITS District Festival next year!
Now, I’m going to have to find other things to perform….
Any idea when REPO! will be back on the stage?

I would LOVE to see a stage production brought here to Vegas, and what do you know, if they have auditions, I might even go for Shilo. That would be SO amazing.
You got your 10 year dream to come true, I’m hoping Las Vegas’s many venues pick it up sometime in the future.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Say it isn’t so!!
::sigh::
I REALLY want to direct this play. But I’m about as far from L.A., Broadway or Vegas that you can get and still be in the same country!
Is very sad and grumpy now.

Hmmm… Toronto’s got a pretty serious large-scale theatre scene… I can just see Repo premiering at the Princess of Wales theatre, previous home to The Lion King, Mama Mia, and Dirty Dancing. It’d be a step up, that’s for sure!

awww….Well I’m gonna do everything in my power to help Repo get on a main stage so that little community theatres like mine can have the pleasure of performing your amazing work.

There is no reason to not at least ask Lionsgate for permissions to do a self-produced interpretation of what is already available, say for a university project or similar, you know?
I still intend to ask, st least to see if I can do it in the name of academia.

What a shame. I was hoping to convince my drama teacher look into doing this as our senior play this upcoming year.

It needs to happen! I am bummed this movie had limited release and feel it needs to be bigger than it is being recognized as. This show was born for stage.

I agree with everyone else that this is VERY DISAPPOINTING NEWS! I’m a member of a network of opera singers, dj’s, professional dancers, lighting designers, and artists that would love to put up this show locally in Charlotte NC on a volunteer basis. Perfect cast, perfect musical director, technical director, theatrical director and set designer, not to mention choreographers, but alas…we do not become artists for the incredibly high pay, now do we? Would LOVE to tackle this once some Broadway bigwig is smart enough to leave Disney the hell alone and give a real show a shot for once! *grumble grumble growl hiss grumble*
There…I feel a little bit better now.

I will be trying to get this play going in my University.
I will update on the proceedings, but this is sad news that this cannot be a play we can show in small theaters.
Hopefully at least there will be a shadow-cast, and if my luck skyrockets, I will try to make it an annual thing. Maybe make it a spring show or something along those lines, but thank you for providing the information on who I have to contact, and thank you for being so supportive of your fans

Hmm a setback..fuck it, the worst they can do is say no:)
twould be amazing, a full live performance though not just actors miming scenes with the film projected as the backdrop…anyone up for doing it anyway? non-profit, just do it for the craic:)

If there is a listing of some sort, Mr. Zdunich, please add another name to a list of someone who loves this work and would love to direct it on the community theater stage. *briefly considers a petition*
Allow me to take just a second of your time to let you know that down here in the Mid-South Tri State area everyone I know has seen and loved your work. I know that if the rights were even available for purchase I could get a good community theater production going. So, as I said, please add another name to the list.
I will be watching the bigwigs for some movement. I hope it comes.
